Longform journalism
Since a high school English teacher introduced me to it, I've loved longform - reads long enough to get some real thought and reasoning across, but short enough that I can finish one during lunch or on a train ride. I tend to find out about good longform through the the newsletters I read every day, but here are a few of my favorite sites:
- TheWalrus.ca
- New York Times
- The Atlantic
- Wall Street Journal
- The Economist
- Atavist Magazine
Side quests
In the last few years I've learned that I am absolutely not the type of person to sit at home on a weekend. I love getting out and doing random, spontaneous things. See what I'm up to on my Now page.
Hiking, running, and biking
Since moving to Southern California, going outdoors is my favorite way to be active. These days, I even find myself looking forward to my (nearly) daily run.
Web development
Programming in general scratches an itch for structured problem solving with an infinite solution set. Plus, AI and vibe coding has really brought the fun back to web dev for me recently.

Travel and optimizing all the points
Travel is almost like a really big side quest to me, but I'm even more interested in maximizing all the points - credit card points, hotel status, and airline miles. Travelling nicely at the lowest price possible is super satisfying. It does help that I'm currently working in a travel-heavy industry. All the status challenges make a big difference.
Transit cards
These are cards used to pay for public transportation around the world, enough said. See here: https://transitcards.alexwang.net/
